Biographical Sketch

Dr. Richard Lee is a cardiac surgeon at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and the surgical director for the Center of Atrial Fibrillation at the Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute. He is a member of the Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation and an assistant professor at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine.

Dr. Lee received his medical degree from the University of Illinois School of Medicine in 1993. He completed his general surgery residency at Rush University and his cardiothoracic surgery residency at Washington University in Saint Louis. Subsequently, at the Cleveland Clinic he received advanced training in adult cardiac surgery including heart transplantation and the surgical treatment of atrial fibrillation. He has been in clinical practice since 2003.

During his general surgical training, Dr. Lee dedicated two years exclusively to research at Washington University. There, under the guidance of Dr. James Cox, Dr. Lee developed a maze surgery on the beating heart that was the foundation for the minimally invasive surgery that he offers to patients today.

Dr. Lee practices the full spectrum of adult cardiac surgery and has special interests in surgical treatments of atrial fibrillation, mitral valve repair, tricuspid valve repair, and surgical alternatives to heart transplantation.
