Biographical Sketch

Dixon B. Kaufman is Professor and Vice Chair of the Department of Surgery at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University in Chicago. Dr. Kaufman completed his clinical surgical residency and transplant surgery fellowship training at the University of Minnesota in 1992. He received his Ph.D. degree from that institution in 1994. Dr. Kaufman moved to Northwestern University in 1992 and initiated and currently serves as director of the Pancreas and Islet Transplantation Programs of Northwestern Memorial Hospital. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1996, received tenure in 2001, and was promoted to full professor in 2004. He received the Fowler McCormick Professorship in 2008. He was appointed deputy Director of the Comprehensive Transplant Center in 2009.

His clinical focus has been on kidney, pancreas and islet transplantation. The Northwestern pancreas transplant program began in 1993, and currently ranks seventh worldwide in cumulative volume. The Northwestern program was the first in North America to conduct and publish studies regarding steroid-free immunosuppression in pancreas transplantation, and the first to describe the use of alemtuzumab in pancreas transplants. His basic research efforts have focused on the immunobiology of islet transplantation, and most recently on 2 highly collaborative interdisciplinary projects involving the development of non-invasive imaging modalities of the transplanted islet, and bioactive tissue engineering for islet implantation. His experimental clinical research has focused on immunotherapy of islet transplantation. He has completed 2 RO-1 awards and currently serves on the steering committees as site PI of the NIH-funded Clinical Islet Transplant (CIT) consortium, His CV lists over 160 manuscripts and book chapters.

Dr. Kaufman has held leadership positions in many facets of the transplant field. Dr. Kaufman has been Chair of the Education Committee of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS), and has served as Executive Program Committee Chair for the American Transplant Congress. He currently serves on the Council of the ASTS, is an associate editor for the American Journal of Transplantation, Transplantation Journal, Cell Transplantation Journal, and Clinical Transplantation Journal. He serves as Chair of the Pancreas/Islet Transplant Committee of the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS).
