Biographical Sketch

An accomplished clinician, surgeon, and educator, Dr. Pearce is the chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and medical director of the Vascular Laboratory. He is also the associate director of the Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute. His special interests include general vascular surgery, peripheral vascular disease, venous problems and aneurysms.

With more than 15 years of experience at Northwestern University, Dr. Pearce is a dedicated educator as a professor of Vascular Surgery at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine and also served as program director of the Vascular Surgery Fellowship (1994 - 2005). He was named the Violet R. and Charles A. Baldwin Professor of Vascular Surgery at Northwestern University Medical School in 2001.

A member of the Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation, Dr. Pearce is also an established researcher. He has distinguished himself as a clinician scientist and has been actively funded for laboratory research since 1984. In 1992 he received an NIH Academic Award in Systemic and Pulmonary Vascular Diseases, as one of a few surgeons recognized for their contributions to a better understanding of vascular diseases. Dr. Pearce has wide-ranging investigative interests, from studying basic cell and molecular mechanisms of aneurysm formation to gene therapy of critical limb ischemia and outcome studies of interventional procedures.

Dr. Pearce has served on the editorial boards of six journals dedicated to vascular diseases. He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed articles, 88 chapters, and 19 textbooks on vascular surgery, and has spoken before scientific communities throughout the world. He is a member of many academic societies including the American Surgical Association, and he served as president of the American Association for Vascular Surgery from 2001 to 2002. He was the executive editor of the national vascular website VascularWeb.org from 2001 to 2003. He currently serves as chairman of the American Vascular Association.

Dr. Pearce graduated from Harvard University in 1971 with honors and completed his medical education at the University of Colorado, graduating cum laude and Alpha Omega Alpha in 1975. His general surgery residency was at the University of Colorado, and he completed his Vascular Surgery fellowship at Northwestern University in 1982. He is board certified in general surgery, vascular surgery and critical care medicine.
